You know when you have that tickle in your throat that you can’t seem to clear up?

It often happens when you have a lot of congestion from a cold or the flu.

Your throat becomes irritated from the congestion.

This happened to me recently at the tail end of a bout with the flu.

It seemed like every half hour or so the irritation in my throat would send me into a fit of coughing. These coughing spells left me drained of energy.

I found relief by gargling with a simple tea using thyme. You could also find the same relief with sage.

My favorite part about this tea is that I didn’t have to run to the store when I was feeling miserable for any of the ingredients. I simple opened my kitchen spice cabinet, and pulled out the thyme and sage.

Thyme tea is more of a tea to gargle with rather that to sip.

However, if you omit the salt, it makes a tasty tea to sip for even more throat relief.

Try this gargling *tea* the next time you feel irritation in the back of your throat that seems to lead to one round of coughing attack after the other.

Thyme/Sage Tea to Reduce Coughing

  • 1 cup (240 ml) hot water

  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) dried thyme or sage

  • dash of salt

Bring water to a gentle boil in a saucepan. Place the dried sage or thyme in the pan. Add a dash of salt.

Cover with a lid, and steep the herb for 10 minutes. Covering with a lid prevents the oils from evaporating in any escaping steam. Strain the tea into your favorite tea cup.

Allow the tea to cool to a comfortable temperature so that you can gargle with it. Gargling with this tea helps to clear your throat of mucus. It also helps with throat inflammation.

Recipe is from Lavender, Parsley, Peppermint and Sage from Shea Zukowski.
